🌧️ Living in Constant Fear: The Silent Struggles of Mountain Ash Residents 🌧️

Imagine waking up every day unsure if your home will be underwater by night. That’s the grim reality for residents of Cardiff Road, Mountain Ash, who’ve faced 13 floods since 2018. The stress is palpable, with families reluctant to make home improvements fearing they’re futile against the relentless water.
Russell Jones, 66, knows this all too well. In his 22 years on the street, recent floods have wreaked havoc on his life, costing him doors, windows, and countless tools. “You never get a clean house because of the sewage,” he laments. His once-thriving garden often morphs into a colossal swimming pool during downpours.

The culprit? A hole left in a sewer inspection chamber back in 2017. Despite attempts to fix it, residents remain on high alert, bracing themselves whenever grey clouds loom. After enduring waist-deep floods during Storm Dennis in 2020, Russell hesitates to invest heavily in repairs—or DJ equipment—only to watch floodwaters reduce them to debris.
While Welsh Water acknowledges the issue, pointing to overwhelmed sewers and riverbanks during storms, the frustration grows. Russell reflects on neighbours’ losses, noting some homes tragically flooded with sewage, leaving them in ruins.
Local authorities and partner agencies continue to explore permanent solutions, but for now, the community remains vigilant, ready for battle with the next storm. 🌊
