Grass snakes, the UK’s largest reptile, are non-venomous and usually shy away from humans. So, no need to panic if you bump into one! These creatures are often called “water snakes,” as they love hanging around riverbanks and ponds. While they can be tricky to see in the grass, they’re easier to spot swimming.

Not everyone was excited about the sighting, though. Some folks were a bit unnerved at the thought of a six-foot snake gliding through the water, even if it’s harmless. One person said they’d be terrified to find one on their paddleboard!

There was a bit of concern about how the snake would exit the steep-sided canal, with some suggesting a need for a branch to help it climb out.

It’s not uncommon to spot one of these magnificent creatures in the area, with previous sightings including one on the iconic Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Always a fantastic sight to see nature at its best! 🌿
