Big changes are on the horizon for British Gas, as their parent company, Centrica, plans to cut 1,300 jobs across six centres, including one in Wales. This move comes despite recent efforts to transform their customer service operations following a dip in earnings.

Around 500 positions are expected to go in Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leicester, Stockport, and Leeds, affecting the customer operations team. Another 800 roles will be trimmed from various support functions within the company.

Centrica claims this shake-up is part of a broader strategy to improve efficiency and customer satisfaction. They state that they’re also investing in skilled roles, aiming to hire more engineers and 500 apprentices this year alone.
However, the GMB union is up in arms, accusing British Gas of replacing valuable human jobs with artificial intelligence. They argue that already overworked and underpaid staff are being sidelined in favour of chatbots – a claim Centrica firmly denies, calling it “simply wrong.”
Stay tuned as this story unfolds, highlighting the very real impacts on jobs and the evolving role of technology in customer service. What do you think of this big move by British Gas? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
