Big news from the high street! Marks & Spencer is jumping on the pay rise bandwagon, following the footsteps of Aldi and Lidl. Starting this April, M&S shop floor staff across the UK will see their hourly pay jump to £13.41, a well-timed boost that outpaces the current inflation rate. This move means an extra £132 a month in their pockets compared to last year. For those working within the M25, the rate goes up to £14.74 per hour.

This pay rise places M&S among the top-paying retailers in the UK, trailing just behind their budget supermarket rivals. Aldi is leading the pack with a pay boost coming into effect on April 1, raising wages for 28,000 retail employees to £13.50 nationwide and £14.88 in the M25 zone, with further increases possible based on tenure. Lidl isn’t far behind, having increased its starting wage to £13.45 from March 1, climbing to £14.45 with experience, and reaching £14.80 within the M25, depending on time served.

M&S’s pay bump is just part of the company’s broader “reshape for growth” programme, which has already seen a 34% pay enhancement over four years and £350 million invested in staff perks. These include a 20% discount on all M&S branded items and a standout Sharesave scheme. M&S CEO Stuart Machin stated, “Our store colleagues are at the heart of our business, welcoming and serving our customers every day and it is important that we invest in them and their pay.”
The retailer also has its sights set on expansion, with plans for 500 potential new locations across the UK. It’s clear M&S is committed not just to surviving but thriving in today’s retail landscape while ensuring their staff feel valued and rewarded for their dedication. Now that’s a win-win!
