Heartfelt tributes pour in for Dr Peter Griffiths, a pioneering figure who touched countless lives in Wales. As the first Medical Director of Tŷ Olwen Hospice when it opened in 1981, Dr Griffiths was instrumental in shaping hospice care, ensuring patients and their families faced end-of-life with peace, dignity, and kindness. His passion for palliative care began at St Christopher’s Hospice alongside Dame Cecily Saunders, and his legacy continues to impact many.

After retiring in 1997, Dr Griffiths took on roles as trustee and chairman, leaving a lasting impact with his vision and dedication. Idris Baker praised him as “an outstanding visionary and pioneer” of hospice care, remembering his tireless efforts in advocating for compassionate end-of-life care during a time when awareness was limited.
Colleagues and friends recall Dr Griffiths not only as a brilliant doctor but a true gentleman who cared deeply for his staff and patients. Pat Davies shared fond memories of working alongside him, while Maralyn Thomas highlighted his kindness and dedication, calling him a “great doctor and a great person.”

Dr Griffiths’ compassion and determination continue to inspire improvements in hospice care, ensuring his legacy benefits those in need. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his family, and we honour his remarkable contributions that have made a profound difference in so many lives. Rest in peace, Dr Griffiths.
