🌍 **Benefits Scandal Alert: UK Claimant Exposed for Greek Getaway! 🇬🇷💰**

Imagine sunning it up in Greece while still cashing in on UK benefits! That’s exactly what Dawna Bird, a Derby resident, managed to do, racking up a whopping £14,000 in fraudulent claims. Derby Crown Court unveiled her cheeky scheme, which involved gallivanting around Greece for more than 1,000 days without telling the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). 🤯

Bird, 66, had a legal obligation to report any overseas trips lasting over 28 days due to her Personal Independence Payments (PIP) claims. Instead, she hid the fact that she was soaking up the Greek sunshine, even going so far as to advertise her childminding services on Facebook while out there. Talk about nerve!
Her escapades began in 2019 when she started claiming PIP benefits to help with her living costs due to health issues. Yet, she conveniently “forgot” to mention her long stints in Greece from 2019 to 2023. 🏖️
But Dawna wasn’t alone in this misadventure! Her hubby, Harry Bird, was already convicted for bagging a staggering £70,000 fraudulently. He got a cushy nine-month suspended sentence.
On the brink of trial, Dawna pled guilty and was treated to a five-month suspended sentence, as the evidence against her was undeniable. Judge Shaun Smith KC didn’t mince words: “The evidence was pretty overwhelming and in the end you have seen sense.”
Now, Dawna is repaying the cash bit by bit. Her past isn’t squeaky clean either, with theft and handling stolen goods convictions from way back in the 80s. It seems like old habits die hard!
While Dawna jet-setted, the UK taxpayer footed the bill. Let’s hope this serves as a reminder: honesty is indeed the best policy. ✈️🔍
