In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers lurking on social media, 19-year-old Cory Jones from Treorchy has been jailed for exploiting young children online. Using platforms like WhatsApp and Snapchat, he befriended 37 minors aged 10 to 16, manipulated them into sending explicit content, and then blackmailed them into complying further.

Cardiff Crown Court heard how Jones gained the trust of these vulnerable kids by posing as their peer and leveraging mutual friends to seem credible. However, he quickly turned conversations into something much more sinister, coercing them into sharing indecent images and videos with threats of public exposure if they refused.

Parents of the victims shared heart-wrenching stories in court about the emotional toll this betrayal has taken on their families. One father expressed feelings of failure and anger, wishing he had known earlier. A mother admitted to constant worry over her daughter’s wellbeing, struggling to find balance between protection and allowing her child freedom.

The court uncovered a chilling record of Jones’ deeds stored on his phone: 172 indecent images and many disturbing communication recordings. Despite his attempts to hide behind a veneer of youth and innocence, justice prevailed. Judge Jeremy Jenkins described Jones as a “socially isolated loner” and sentenced him to eight years in a detention centre. Plus, he’s been slapped with a lifetime sexual harm prevention order and must join the sexual offenders register for life.

The community is coming together, with the Crown Prosecution Service and South Wales Police commending the bravery of the victims in bringing Jones to justice. Detective Inspector Prendiville emphasised the need for vigilance and proactive protection of our children online, stating that predatory behaviour will not be tolerated.

Let this case be a stark reminder to all parents and guardians: keep an eye on online activities and have open conversations about internet safety with your children. Stay alert and protect our future generations from predators like Jones.
