Man Wearing Crucifix in Court Accused of Abusing Girl, Who Nearly Took Her Own Life

A church-goer found guilty of horrific crimes has received a lengthy prison sentence after his actions drove a young girl to attempt suicide. Joshua Bennett, 32, was sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison, alongside an extended four-year licence for causing serious psychological harm to his young victim. Despite presenting himself in court with a large crucifix, there was nothing virtuous about his actions. Bennett, from Cwmbran, admitted to sexually abusing the girl starting when she was just 10 years old, leaving her with severe anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

The devastating impact on the girl’s life was laid bare during the court hearing. She shared how the abuse stole her childhood and adolescence, leaving her struggling with mental health issues and feeling isolated. She bravely revealed how she endured sleepless nights, nightmares, and ongoing suicidal thoughts.

In a moving victim statement, she said, “I’ve lost the person I used to be, along with the chance to enjoy my teenage years and make memories.”

Judge Daniel Williams, addressing Bennett, highlighted how his mask of virtue collapsed under the weight of his crimes. Bennett, despite claiming poor mental health and a heightened sex drive as excuses, was made subject to a 15-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and an indefinite restraining order.
