This weekend, Wales witnessed an extraordinary gathering as thousands of women from across the globe participated in the world’s largest all-female ultra marathon event—the SheUltra marathon. An impressive 2,300 women tackled the 50km route from Abersoch beach to Pwllheli town centre on the stunning Llŷn Peninsular. This event is more than just a marathon—it’s a powerful movement raising funds for cancer charities, founded by endurance runner Huw Williams in response to his own battle with cancer.

Huw, diagnosed with inoperable stage 4 neuro-endocrine cancer in 2019, aimed to raise £1 million for women’s cancer charities over five years. The spirit of the event embodies strength and resilience, with women of all ages and backgrounds pushing their limits, regardless of weather conditions.
Rhiannon Wright, one of the participants, shared how she was determined to overcome last year’s knee setback and finish strong this year. She joined the event not just to challenge herself, but to show her daughters the importance of determination and supporting one another.

The SheUltra marathon is a testament to the incredible power of community. Many of these women face challenges beyond the trail, and by participating, they demonstrate courage and solidarity. From Italy, Portugal, Poland, and beyond, their collective spirit shone brightly in the beautiful Welsh landscape.

Huw highlighted that this is not just a race, but a celebration of every woman’s journey, with no cut-off times and every participant celebrated at the start line. Medals are awarded to honour the women we’ve lost to cancer and those bravely fighting it.
The event fuels a sense of purpose and hope, proving that together, they are stronger. Judging by the stunning photos from the day, the SheUltra is not just about the extraordinary feat of completing an ultra marathon, but also about friendship, courage, and shared experiences, empowering women and supporting vital causes.
