A massive landslide has left a small Welsh community feeling stranded and neglected! The collapse occurred when a riverbank below the main road between Cwmyoy and Llanthony in Monmouthshire gave way. Since January 30, residents in Llanthony Valley have been cut off, with the only alternative route being a lengthy 37-mile detour over treacherous conditions.

Local Michelle Turner voiced frustration: “We’re cut off with little warning, no clear plan, and it feels like a crisis!” The closed road poses a serious safety risk, with specialists warning that further movement is likely beneath the road’s surface, creating a vertical edge immediately beside the carriageway.
The closure has disrupted essential services. Michelle mentioned, “Ambulances and fire engines are now faced with longer routes, which could delay emergency response times.” There have been cases where barriers were temporarily removed just to allow access during emergencies.

Residents tackled unsafe routes for essentials, with farmers feeling stressed as they struggle to obtain supplies, risking their safety just to keep their livestock alive. Parents are equally concerned about school transport, family obligations, and medical appointments.
Monmouthshire County Council’s spokesperson explained that due to continued ground instability, the road must remain closed for public safety. Authorities are working diligently to ensure services like emergency access and school transport are coordinated effectively.
The Council highlights its commitment to solving the issue with ongoing investigations and engineering to provide a permanent fix. As work continues, the community is pleading for swift action to restore their normal life and ensure their safety. Locals stress they don’t want tourists ignoring the closures, fearing more risks from unwanted traffic on unsafe roads. While the road remains shut, the community continues to push for immediate solutions and stay connected for updates. Stay safe, folks!
