Feeling the Heat? 🌞 Here’s Why Women Experience Hotter Summers!

As temperatures soar to a sizzling 40°C this week, many might welcome the sun, but if you’re among those struggling with the heat, science has your back! Dr Amir Khan, a beloved TV doctor, shares why women often feel the warmth more intensely than men.

Turns out, it’s not just hormones. While oestrogen and progesterone influence temperature regulation, there’s more beneath the surface. Generally, women have smaller bodies and less blood volume than men, making heat transfer slower. Combine that with smaller hearts and narrower blood vessels, and it takes even longer for heat to escape. Interestingly, women often have a higher skin temperature but a lower core temperature, so they feel hot even when their body isn’t overheating.
Dehydration hits women harder too, especially petite women. Losing a litre of sweat impacts them more severely. Low iron levels, common due to periods, add to the exhaustion in hot weather.
Let’s not forget the sleep issues many women face during menopause, which only worsens with the heat. If you’re feeling the scorch, especially as a woman, know it’s all tied to biology. So, go on and complain—it’s perfectly valid! 😉
Stay cool this heatwave with these tips:
– Avoid direct sun between 11 am and 3 pm.
– Use high-protection sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and seek shade.
– Keep curtains closed in sunny rooms; open windows when cooler.
– Plan exercise during cooler hours and stay hydrated.
– Wear light, loose clothing of natural fabrics.
– Refresh with cool water and cold packs.
Remember, it’s your biology at play, so take care and keep yourself cool! 🌬️👒💧
