Great news for taxi users in Merthyr Tydfil! After much debate and feedback from both the public and taxi trade, there’s been a decision to freeze taxi licence fees. 😄

The council had initially proposed increasing fees, which would have seen a new three-year driver licence rise by £40 and a private hire operator licence more than double over five years. But, thanks to the concerns aired by 77 respondents, including 80% of the taxi trade, councillors have decided to keep fees at their current rates.

Why is this important? The fear was that any fee increases would lead to taxi fares going up, hitting passengers hard—especially those in rural areas or vulnerable communities. 🚕💬

Public feedback also highlighted worries about the cumulative financial pressures such as fuel, insurance, and the overall cost of living. People wanted to see a fair and balanced approach where licensing not only covers administrative costs but also takes public interest into account.

So, if you’ve been worried about taxi fare hikes, breathe easy for now. The council has listened and acted in favour of the community. 👏

What are your thoughts on this decision? Should the taxi trade bear the full cost of licensing, or should there be a more shared approach? Let us know in the comments below! ⬇️
