Midwife tragically passes away due to excessive painkiller use for back pain relief

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, beloved mother-of-three and dedicated midwife Amie Barnes tragically passed away after taking an excess of painkillers to alleviate severe back pain. Amie, 37, who was eagerly awaiting spinal surgery, spent a seemingly normal evening with her partner, Jack, on July 25 in Lancashire. They enjoyed a cosy night in with a bottle of wine and a takeaway before heading to bed. However, the next day took a devastating turn. When Jack returned from work, he found Amie unresponsive in bed. Despite initial suspicions due to a facial injury and blood, which was later found to be non-suspicious, it was revealed that Amie had taken a mix of painkillers along with a small amount of alcohol.

An inquest concluded her death as a misadventure, explaining that while none of the medications alone were fatal, their combination might have caused significant sedation. A coroner remarked that Amie’s intention was likely pain relief rather than harm. In the months leading to her passing, she frequently consulted her GP about her chronic pain, for which she was prescribed various medications.
