Mother Convicted of Fatally Harming Infant Daughter in Tragic Court Decision

Heartbreaking news as a mum has been found guilty of killing her three-month-old daughter, Kaylani Kalanzi. Even before Kaylani was born, she was under the watchful eye of social services with a child protection plan in place. Just three months into her life, she was violently shaken, leaving her with devastating brain injuries, a broken leg, and fractured ribs. Despite fighting for her life, Kaylani tragically passed away two weeks later.

The Old Bailey heard that Kaylani’s parents prioritised their tumultuous relationship over their child’s wellbeing. Nazli Merthoca, 24, was found guilty of manslaughter, while her partner, Herbert Kalanzi, 35, was cleared of any wrongdoing.

Prosecutor Zoe Johnson KC described the couple as “selfish and irresponsible”, painting a picture of a home where Kaylani was left vulnerable to harm. Although cleared of murder, Merthoca was found responsible for her daughter’s death and is now awaiting sentencing.

Kaylani had a difficult start, born prematurely and spending 29 days in a special care unit before going home. Despite social services’ involvement and a plan for the dad to attend a programme aimed at improving fathering skills, the family’s troubles proved insurmountable.

On the night of July 8, 2024, the nightmare unfolded. Emergency services were called when little Kaylani stopped breathing. Shockingly, Merthoca failed to disclose that the baby had been shaken, leading to severe injuries. Her defence claimed discrimination based on race and gender, but this could not sway the jury from finding her guilty of manslaughter.

Let’s keep Kaylani in our hearts as a reminder of the vulnerable little ones who need our protection. Stay informed and attentive to the welfare of those around you. 💔
