Mother receives jail time for children’s alarming school absenteeism

A Cardiff mum has faced court over her children’s worrying school attendance. Karen Jones, a 32-year-old single mother from Willows Avenue, found herself in hot water after her son missed 98 out of 108 school sessions between April and July 2023. Her daughter’s attendance record wasn’t much better, attending only four times in September and October 2022. The situation escalated, leaving the mum fined £384 and subject to a 12-month community order, which includes a nine-month alcohol treatment programme and a 15-day rehabilitation activity.

Why all the absences? The court heard her son was up all night gaming and couldn’t get up for school, saying he simply “didn’t want to go.” Jones, who has been struggling with alcohol problems, lacked support from the children’s father. Despite efforts by education officers to help, their attempts were met with silence from Jones. In court, she expressed regret and shared that her son is now attending school and has ambitions to go to college for a bricklaying course.
