A hen do turned into chaos when a mum and her daughter ended up in a street brawl in Newcastle. What started as the mother calling her daughter a “sl**” spiralled into a shocking scene when a bystander tried to intervene, resulting in her getting a broken nose.

Donna Ellis, 38, and her 19-year-old daughter, Elisa Smith, had been enjoying a night out on August 10, 2024, when the evening took an unexpected violent twist. The situation got so out of hand that Ellis tried to headbutt a police officer!

The victim, who had been relaxing with after-work drinks, was horrified to witness Ellis’s verbal abuse towards her daughter. Attempting to defuse the situation, she quickly found herself at the centre of a brutal attack. Both Ellis and Smith repeatedly punched and kicked her until she was unconscious.

Police were called to the chaotic scene, which also involved property damage, including a broken betting shop window. The mother-daughter duo was arrested, and the injury left the victim with not only physical wounds but also a lingering fear of crowded areas and loud noises.
Ellis has a hefty record of 103 previous convictions and admitted to the assault and affray charges, alongside assaulting an emergency worker. She was sentenced to 29 months in jail. Smith, who has no prior record, received a 13-month sentence suspended for 18 months, along with 200 hours of unpaid work.
The court called it “mindless violence,” noting the prolonged and merciless nature of the attack. Ellis expressed regret, claiming she doesn’t remember insulting her daughter and is ashamed of the filmed evidence of the scuffle.
The traumatic ordeal left the victim with severe headaches and panic attacks, impacting her job as a support worker. She’s now left wondering if she’ll ever feel safe in a crowd again. This incident should have been a night of celebration but instead turned into a regrettable episode of violence.
