Motorist Slapped with Unexpected £60 Fee at Welsh NCP Lot Despite Never Exiting Vehicle

Rhodri Davies from Bridgend is calling for change after a surprising encounter with a car park in Cardiff. Imagine getting a £60 fine for parking somewhere you didn’t even park! That’s exactly what happened to Rhodri when he received a penalty notice from NCP’s Adam Street car park.

He had briefly entered the busy multi-storey only to leave moments later due to long queues at the pay machine. But weeks later, Rhodri found himself staring at a letter claiming he overstayed, accompanied by images of his car.

The twist? He was able to prove he left and parked at another location, St David’s Shopping Centre, by 6:10 PM — contradicting NCP’s cameras which alleged he was at Adam Street until 6:19 PM. His evidence, courtesy of St David’s parking records, showed he was elsewhere, winning his appeal and leading to the fine being cancelled.

Rhodri’s frustration stems from the potential for others to be unfairly charged, especially if they don’t have the same evidence he had. Imagine if you couldn’t prove it! He’s raised concerns not only with NCP but also with the British Parking Association and the Information Commissioner’s Office. He argues that this kind of error could seriously impact individuals, like those going for job interviews.

NCP has responded by saying they’re investigating the data and thanking Rhodri for bringing this to their attention. They assure that any found discrepancies will be addressed.

Rhodri’s story is a warning to us all about the importance of keeping records when using car parks and staying vigilant about errors. It’s a simple drive-time turned into a valuable lesson about safeguarding against inaccurate automated systems. What do you think? Should there be more accountability for these systems?
