Eryri was buzzing with anticipation as athletes prepped for a thrilling weekend of races, including the Snowdonia Trail Marathon and Yr Wyddfa 24. However, at the eleventh hour, organisers Always Aim High Events pulled the plug on all four events meant for Saturday and Sunday. 🏃♂️💨
In a statement that dropped like a bombshell at 8.15pm on Friday, it was revealed all competitions were off due to safety concerns amidst a blazing heatwave. Rumours suggest soaring temperatures up to 34°C prompted the move, prioritising the safety of participants, volunteers, and staff. 🌞🔥
Athletes voiced their frustrations, with some already en route when notified of the sudden change. One runner lamented, “I was on my way to Llanberis, only to find upon arrival that it was all cancelled. We were assured at lunchtime Friday it was a go!” 🤦♂️
Always Aim High explained that after a final safety meeting at 6pm that Friday, conditions were found to be much harsher than predicted. The risks of heat illness during the event, especially in such a remote location, were deemed too high. The decision was tough, but keeping everyone safe was their top priority. 🩺
