The incident took place during the late afternoon on Monday, 4 August, when emergency teams were alerted at approximately 5:23pm. The combined efforts of HM Coastguard Fishguard and HM Coastguard Teifi were quickly mobilised, responding to reports of a casualty stranded on the rocky hill favoured by walkers for its panoramic vistas and historical iron-age hillfort.

On arriving at the scene, coastguard teams discovered the individual in a precarious position high on Carn Ingli. Early assessments suggested the victim, a young male, had likely suffered a broken ankle, rendering him unable to safely descend the steep, uneven slopes unaided.

Initial attempts were made to evacuate the injured party by stretcher. However, as the team began the process of moving him, it became clear that the treacherous, jagged terrain would significantly endanger both rescuers and the casualty himself. Recognising these risks, and prioritising everyone’s safety, the decision was made to abort the ground rescue.

With ground extraction deemed unfeasible, the teams swiftly requested support from a helicopter unit. Responding promptly, the aircrew arrived on site and executed a winch operation, carefully lifting the casualty from his precarious location. He was then flown directly to hospital for further treatment.

The operation highlights the unique challenges that emergency services often face in rural and mountainous regions, where access by foot or vehicle is sometimes impossible. In such scenarios, air support remains a vital lifeline, enabling swift and effective interventions that can dramatically improve outcomes for those involved.

HM Coastguard Fishguard later issued a statement following the rescue, providing details of the complex operation. “Team tasked with HM Coastguard Teifi to a young male with a suspected broken ankle on Carn Ingli, Newport. Casualty care was given before an attempt was made to stretcher out. Due to steep rocky terrain this was halted to prevent discomfort to the casualty and injury to coastguards. A request was made for helicopter support which arrived shortly afterwards to winch out the injured male and transport him to hospital,” the statement said.

In response to the incident, the coastguard urged the public to recognise the potential dangers of outdoor pursuits, especially in mountainous or coastal areas. They advised that anyone encountering an emergency by the sea, on cliffs, or in other similarly hazardous environments should immediately dial 999 and request assistance from the coastguard.

While Carn Ingli is a cherished destination for both tourists and local hillwalkers, the rescue serves as a reminder of the unpredictable perils such adventures can entail. The expertise and coordination shown by emergency services ensured a successful outcome in this instance.

This event also underlines the significance of prompt and effective coordination between ground and air rescue teams in hard-to-reach places, a capability that has proven critical time and again across the Welsh landscape. As more people are drawn to the outdoors, authorities continue to stress the importance of preparation and caution for all those venturing into the countryside.
