What lies hidden beneath the sand is truly remarkable. As winter tides retreated, they revealed peat “pavements” peppered with prehistoric animal hoof prints, including those from now-extinct aurochs. Adding to the mystery, time-worn tree stumps emerged from the mud, alongside remnants of ancient pathways that once crossed the landscape.

This area, now a hub for sunbathers and yacht enthusiasts, was once a thriving woodland around 7,700 years ago, teeming with deer, pigs, and even possibly wolves. Radiocarbon dating from recent research suggests that trees graced Abersoch’s shores about 4,300 years ago. As the sea level rose—estimated to be 75 metres lower during ancient times—these woodlands were replaced by wetlands and later submerged by the encroaching tide.

Once referred to as “Noah’s Trees” due to legends of biblical floods, these submerged forests pepper the coastline, each unfolding its own tale of the distant past. In fact, between storm shifts and tidal changes, these ancient giants become more visible and have inspired stories of drowned settlements, like the mythical sunken kingdom of Cantre’r Gwaelod.

Amidst this landscape lies the mystery wreck—possibly the 64ft trading vessel, the Fosil, last seen in 1889, known for its wooden tree nails and copper bindings. This enigmatic ship is still classified as “unidentified,” but its cargo of broken slates hints at its bustling past.

It’s not just a peek into history but a reminder of the ever-changing nature of our environment as sea levels continue to rise. Each glimpse of this hidden world beneath the waves is a fleeting encounter with a time long past, offering a brief connection to our prehistoric ancestors. 🌊🌳📜
