Tragedy struck on a dark Newport road when Alan Galudzinski, a 26-year-old e-scooter rider, lost his life after being hit by a Vauxhall Corsa. Alan, originally from Poland but living in Newport, was travelling at around 19mph on the A4042 dual carriageway when the accident happened. The Corsa, driving at 70mph, hit Alan from behind, leaving investigators to piece together the shocking scene.

In a haunting twist, Alan’s identity was discovered through a McDonald’s cap found at the scene, which led investigators to confirm his identity and notify his family. The crash had such an impact that his clothing and shoes were scattered across the carriageway, leaving collision experts astonished.

PC Matt Rue, one of the specialist collision investigators, noted the unusual sight of an e-scooter on a dual carriageway. He explained that such scooters are illegal on roads and pavements, highlighting how vulnerable they can make their riders. At the time of the crash, Alan was found to be over twice the legal alcohol limit, raising questions about his judgement that night.
The investigation revealed that the scooter’s rear red light, although visible, blended into the night’s landscape, making it difficult for the driver to see or react in time. Investigators believe the driver had little to no chance to avoid the crash at such high speed. No charges were brought against the 18-year-old driver of the Corsa.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by e-scooters on public roads, especially when combined with alcohol.
