🚨 Balaclavas Be Gone! 🚨

In a bold move to tackle rising crime and antisocial behaviour, Darlington is considering banning balaclavas with a hefty £100 fine for wearing one. This comes amidst growing concerns about youths using balaclavas to hide their identities while committing crimes and creating a nuisance on quads, e-bikes, and e-scooters. 🎭

The town has been buzzing with reports of antisocial antics, from weaving through traffic to hurling food and even using racist slurs. Between July and August, Durham Police received a staggering 800 reports of such behaviour. It’s no wonder residents are feeling uneasy! 😟
Local MP Lola McEvoy is urging the council to introduce a public space protection order, allowing police to target face coverings—religious coverings being the only exception. Similar measures have already been rolled out in Surrey, Essex, and the West Midlands. McEvoy said, “It’s intimidating. People don’t want to go to the park with their kids. It’s time for action!” 🚨👩👧
The police have noted over 100 incidents involving balaclavas in the town centre just last year, and a local resident shared concerns at a community meeting after spotting these covered-up youths on their Ring camera in the early hours—activities unknown but certainly unsettling. 🎥
Darlington Borough Council is teaming up with the police to address these worries, as both bodies stress that everyone deserves to feel safe in their community. Inspector David Littlefair remarked, “Their actions are making people feel unsafe and unable to use public spaces comfortably.” Let’s hope this initiative helps make our streets safer for all! 🌍✨
