🚫 Say goodbye to some weight-loss drug ads! 🚫

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is cracking down on ads that prey on people’s insecurities, especially when it comes to body image. Several ads for prescription-only medicines (POMs) have been banned for crossing the line.
Why the fuss? 🤔 Well, ads from companies like MedExpress and Chequp were flagged for exploiting body image concerns. One MedExpress ad even targeted new mums, suggesting they should use medication to shed post-baby weight! 😱 It featured a woman contemplating her reflection, implying weight loss should be the top priority post-pregnancy. Not cool, right?

Chequp’s ad came under fire too, for insinuating there’s a “stigma” around being a certain size with its message, “I don’t want to be skinny. I just don’t want to be the biggest person in the room.” These kinds of messages can be seriously damaging, playing into stereotypes and pressures that are all too common today.
🚨 Jess Tye, a regulatory projects manager at the ASA, made it clear: “The law and our rules prohibit the promotion of POMs directly to the public. These rulings reinforce that exploiting insecurities about body image is unacceptable.”
This move forms part of a larger effort to protect the public from irresponsible advertising, carried out in partnership with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and the General Pharmaceutical Council.
The takeaway? 💬 Ads shouldn’t make us feel bad about ourselves, and certainly shouldn’t push us towards unnecessary medical treatments. Let’s cheer for body positivity and support in all sizes and shapes! 💪✨
