A councillor has sparked outrage for tucking into his dinner during a critical council debate on child abuse. The incident took place during a Gwynedd Council meeting addressing the failures in the case of Neil Foden, a former headteacher convicted of heinous crimes against young girls. With years of missed opportunities to stop Foden highlighted in a recent report, the discussion was incredibly sensitive.

Cllr Elwyn Edwards, representing Llandderfel, was caught on camera eating his meal three hours into the meeting. This action prompted criticism, with many viewing it as showing a lack of respect for the victims. However, Edwards, who has diabetes, defended himself saying, “I have to eat regularly.” He insists that his health condition necessitated the meal and that he remained attentive throughout.

“There’s a vendetta against me,” Edwards claimed, suggesting internal party politics might be at play. He further explained, “I was paying full attention. I’ve heard all of this stuff before and have listened to the women earlier in the day too.”
Plaid Cymru’s Gwynedd chairperson stood by Edwards, stating he has the utmost respect for the victims. The chairperson emphasised that Edwards has apologised if his meal was perceived as disrespectful but pointed out his need to eat due to health reasons, ensuring he could participate fully in discussions.
The situation continues to stir debate about respect and professionalism in council meetings, especially given the delicate topic being discussed. Let us know your thoughts on this! Do you think there’s more to this story?
