Many drivers aren’t aware that a simple check with a 20p coin might save them from licence points, fines, and driving risks. A recent report highlights that over 10,000 motorists were stopped last year for having ‘defective’ vehicles, with tyres being the biggest culprit – 6,670 drivers were pulled over for tyre issues alone!
🔍 Is your tread depth up to code? It must be at least 1.6mm deep across the middle three-quarters and cover the entire tyre width. Not sure? Insert a 20p coin into the tread grooves. If you can’t see its outer band, you’re good to go!
But it doesn’t end there – look out for cuts or bulges in your tyres. And remember, tyres must be suitable for your vehicle in terms of type, size, speed, and load rating.

The RAC noted a drop in incidents compared to 2024 but suspect many more unsafe vehicles are slipping through due to fewer traffic cops. In 2015, there were 1,088 more traffic officers than today. Despite this, 10 million MOTs still fail every year, underscoring the importance of regular vehicle checks.
Jack Halstead from the RAC warns: “Bald tyres can drastically reduce grip, increase stopping distances, and raise blowout risks. Whether it’s tyres, brakes, or steering, every component is crucial for safety.”
