Exciting news for millions across the UK! The government is giving a timely boost to Universal Credit, benefiting around four million households with an extra £295 annually. This change kicks in from 6th April 2026 and aims to provide much-needed support amid the ongoing cost of living challenges.

For many receiving Universal Credit, over half are working families relying on this additional income. With this update, by the end of the decade, the basic rate increase will be worth a whopping £760 extra annually!

While there’s great news about the uplift, it’s a mixed bag for new claimants of the Universal Credit ‘Health Element’, which is seeing a cut from £429.80 to £217.26 as part of efforts to manage welfare spending, especially in health-related areas.

Good news for families: the two-child benefit cap on Universal Credit is being lifted. Now, families can receive the Child Element for more than two children! This offers an extra £351.88 a month for the first child, and £303.94 for each thereafter, subject to the overall benefits cap.
This announcement marks a significant increase above inflation for the main rate of out-of-work support, the largest since the 1980s. The reforms intend to balance core payments with health top-ups to prevent dependency and encourage more sustainable financial independence for claimants.
