Big news on the transportation front! Reform UK’s Welsh leader, Dan Thomas, is shaking things up by suggesting he’d cancel some newly announced train stations in Wales. Earlier this year, the UK Government promised a whopping £14bn for seven new stations, all part of a grand plan to reduce M4 congestion. But Thomas says, “No, thanks!”

His argument? Many of these stations, including those planned between Cardiff and Severn Tunnel Junction, may not be “needed or wanted.” Instead, Thomas is advocating for reviving the M4 relief road scheme, which was shelved back in 2019.

During a lively Welsh leaders’ debate, Thomas declared his party’s commitment to building this relief road, plus essential upgrades to the A470 and A55. When asked about funding, Thomas cheekily pointed to the £14bn earmarked for the stations, suggesting it could be redirected.

Labour leader Eluned Morgan, however, isn’t keen on diverting funds, citing complexities with UK Government budgets. And Monmouthshire Council, which championed for Magor and Undy’s station, warns that cancelling these projects could jeopardise the broader vision of a metro system for South East Wales.

The topic is hot! Labour’s Casnewydd Islwyn candidate, Jayne Bryant, emphasised the difficulty in reallocating these funds. Meanwhile, Plaid Cymru argues it shouldn’t be an either-or situation, advocating for both new rail stations and credible solutions for M4 congestion.

Where do you stand? Should the focus be on new train stations or reviving the M4 relief road? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! 💬🌟
