Unrest erupted in France last night as over 160 people were arrested in the wake of the country’s semi-final World Cup loss to Spain. What began as hopeful celebrations quickly turned sour as French supporters took to the streets of Paris and Lyon after the 2-0 defeat dashed their World Cup dreams. Fireworks weren’t just in the sky; clashes in Paris saw at least 141 arrests, with some fans allegedly firing pyrotechnics at police and emergency services. Meanwhile, in Lyon, a fan gathering spiralled into chaos with riot police deploying tear gas to regain control as projectiles flew and bins burned. The night of upheaval coincided with Bastille Day, intensifying the atmosphere as many had postponed celebrations for the big match. Despite the disturbances, no serious injuries or major damage were reported. France had beefed up security with an additional 70,000 personnel, prepared for the combination of national pride and football fever. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez had earlier cautioned against any unruly behaviour, while President Emmanuel Macron praised both Spain’s victory and the French team’s efforts in a show of solidarity. Can Spain go all the way? They’ll face off against either England or Argentina next. Stay tuned for Sunday’s showdown! ⚽🏆
