⨠Rewrite the Christmas script! Meet Fiona Yassin, a family psychotherapist with a fresh take on the classic ânaughty or niceâ list. While Santa might be famous for it, she suggests it’s time to shelf this tradition and here’s why.

Fiona warns that the ‘naughty or nice’ concept, as charming as it sounds, could be stressing out your little elves. For kids, especially those who already face mental health challenges, being labelled ‘naughty’ can feel like a blow to their self-esteem. It implies theyâre less lovable based on their actions.
Instead, Fiona advises against using this list as a behaviour tool. Gifting should be an unconditional gesture of joy rather than a reward for being âniceâ.

But thatâs just the start! Fiona also points out a few more common festive phrases that might unknowingly steal the joy from the season:
1. âGive grandma a big kissâ – It can undermine body consent. Encourage affection, but let them have the choice.
2. âI deserve another helping ofâŚâ – This could link food to self-worth and guilt. Let’s keep mealtime joyous and pressure-free.
3. âIf we buy you this present, we can’t afford to pay the billsâ – Trying to explain complex adult issues to children can make them worry. So, let’s simplify the message.
4. âYou have to be good now youâve got the present you wantedâ – Remember, gifts come with no strings attached!
5. âYour mum/dad didnât get me a Christmas presentâ – Keep adult matters among adults. Letâs not drag kids into relationship sagas.
Fiona isnât here to grill you on whatâs gone before. Itâs all about being mindful with our words to protect kids from unnecessary anxiety or guilt. Letâs make this Christmas warm, loving, and mentally stress-free for all! đâ¤ď¸
