π Kids Chatting with AI: What’s All the Fuss About? π€

With AI becoming a part of everyday life, it’s no wonder that even kids are turning to chatbots for advice. But just what are they chatting about, and should we be worried? π―

Recent research shows that nearly a third of children have turned to AI to discuss their feelings before speaking to an adult. A whopping 73% of these young users have acted on the advice given by AI, and about 37% didn’t tell an adult about it. Why is AI so appealing? Itβs simple: it’s always there, non-judgemental, and, according to them, keeps their secrets safe. ποΈ
Top chat topics include school grades, relationships with friends and teachers, and, not surprisingly, mental health. While AI is handy, many fear that these digital talks might lack the trust and empathy found in human interactions.
Dr. Marguerita Magennis, a specialist in early years and parenting, warns that while AI can be a helpful tool, children need resilient and supportive human relationships. She raises a crucial question: why do kids feel safer talking to tech rather than family or teachers? Perhaps itβs time to build better connections at home and in schools. π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦
Parents are concerned about the accuracy and appropriateness of AI’s advice. While 88% are calling for some restrictions, 47% suggest using these tools only with parental consent, and 40% want a complete ban for under-16s. The government is contemplating new online safety rules, potentially banning social media for those under 16. π±
Felix Ohswald, CEO of GoStudent, emphasises that while AI can aid learning, it should never replace conversations with trusted adults. The focus needs to be on understanding AI’s capabilities and limits and helping children think critically about the advice they get.
