Meet Nik Roche, a former landscape gardener turned passionate documentary photographer from South Wales. At 47, Nik picked up his first camera, and has since captured the lives of those living on society’s fringes, not for the sake of photography itself, but out of genuine interest.

An encounter with a fascinating character named Tony in Swansea changed Nik’s life. Tony, who lived unconventionally in a tent behind his house, inspired Nik to follow his own path less travelled. Through their friendship, Nik immersed himself in Tony’s world, capturing authentic moments without posing or pretense. This deep connection led Nik to live in a caravan himself after Tony’s tragic passing in 2022.
Photography, for Nik, is more than just pictures. It’s about sparking conversations about societal norms and understanding the struggles people face, particularly those traumatised or trapped in cycles of hardship. He dives deep into these stories, aiming to reveal the layers beneath the surface.

Though Nik hasn’t picked up his camera since Tony’s passing, he knows he’ll continue to tell these powerful stories again. His work isn’t about showcasing poverty but about exploring trauma and its outcomes, allowing him to say so much more through his lens than words ever could.

Nik’s journey is a heartfelt reminder that sometimes the most profound connections and stories unfold when you least expect them. Keep your eyes open to the world—you never know what, or who, might inspire you next.
