🌍♻️ Exciting news for Cardiff residents: your recycling game is about to change! The city council is set to introduce an eighth bin dedicated to soft plastics like crisp packets and plastic packaging. 🗑️

Say goodbye to those extra trips to the supermarket recycling point! This new service could roll out as soon as this summer, making it much easier to recycle from the comfort of your own home.

Currently, Cardiff homes have bins for general waste, glass, food scraps, garden waste, paper and cardboard, and plastics and cans. Plus, there’s the hygiene collection service for items like nappies. And let’s not forget those handy seagull sacks to keep our streets cleaner!

This move is all part of Cardiff’s initiative to boost recycling rates and meet government targets. The city’s recycling rate hit 64% in 2024/25, but there’s potential to bump this up significantly. Did you know, around 60% of rubbish in black bins could actually be recycled? That’s about 19,000 tonnes of waste!
Councillor Norma Mackie highlights the need for everyone to do their part: “Although it’s challenging, reaching our target is achievable. We need residents to help by recycling and composting as much as possible.”
With a high number of people living in flats, recycling rates are lower in these areas, sitting at about 40%. But don’t worry, a new scheme is in place to improve this, working closely with management agencies.
Stay tuned for updates and find out more at the upcoming council meeting on March 19. Let’s all do our bit to keep Cardiff greener and cleaner! 🌿💪
