In a shocking case that gripped Wales, great-grandmother June Fox-Roberts was brutally murdered in what has been described as one of the most horrifying crimes in the country’s history. The tragedy unfolded after a chilling 999 call from June’s daughter, Abigail, who discovered her mother’s dismembered body in their Pontypridd home on 21st November 2021.

When police arrived, they were confronted with a grisly scene. Detective Superintendent Darren George recounted the horror, revealing that June’s head, legs, and arms were missing. The urgency to find the remaining body parts and bring dignity to June and her family was paramount. Forensics worked tirelessly, uncovering body parts hidden throughout the house, ultimately identifying an axe as the murder weapon.

The investigation took a turn when local rumours unjustly pointed fingers at June’s daughter, Trish, despite her being miles away in Cornwall at the time. However, a tip-off from a nearby tyre yard led police to 25-year-old Luke Deeley, a local student under mental health care, who had slipped through the cracks of the system. Deeley was found dishevelled and attempting to disguise himself with dyed hair. Though his mental state was evident, the court found him accountable, charging him with manslaughter.

Following his trial, Deeley was detained in a high-security hospital. Family and friends mourned June, remembering her as a devoted mother and grandmother who always helped others. Her family expressed their heartbreak over losing such a kind soul to such senseless violence. This tragic story serves as a grave reminder of the need for robust mental health systems and the vulnerabilities that can lead to unimaginable outcomes.
