A man from Llandeilo, Ben Barrett, recently faced Swansea Crown Court after being caught in incriminating AI chatbot conversations. Monitoring software on his phone flagged his discussions about child sexual abuse, breaching his existing sexual harm prevention order.

Barrett, previously convicted for possessing indecent images, thought he was clever by deleting the app involved, but police quickly caught on. Officers found he’d removed the “Polybuzz” app that facilitated these sick chats, directly violating the order prohibiting him from hiding his online activity.

Since 2016, Barrett has been tangled in legal trouble, with previous convictions and brushes with the law, including failure to comply with the sex offenders register. His defence claims he’s been “open and frank” about his behaviour with officials, but the seriousness of his actions paints a different picture.

In court, he was handed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, along with community service and rehabilitation requirements. The judge warned Barrett that another slip-up would land him in custody without further chances.

This case highlights the power of technology in monitoring offenders but also raises questions about the potential misuse of AI applications. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals in our digital age.
