The trouble began in summer 2021 when a spilled drink led Herbert to grip his girlfriend by the throat and pin her against a wall. Things escalated after she became pregnant, with further assaults, including an episode where he violently pushed her onto the bed. These terrifying moments forced her to flee, leading her to seek refuge at a petrol station, from where she contacted family for help.

Despite the birth of their daughter in 2022, Herbert’s abusive behaviour didn’t stop. During a visit meant to help with childcare, he reacted with aggression again, even pinning her to the headboard, following a remark she made about his fathering abilities.

The court heard harrowing impact statements from the victim, highlighting how these events have left her struggling with stress and anxiety. She now fears developing new relationships and is constantly on edge, worried she might encounter Herbert.

Herbert, who had denied the allegations initially, eventually pleaded guilty to coercive and controlling behaviour. He was sentenced to a suspended prison term and ordered to complete community service and rehabilitation activities. Additionally, a restraining order was put in place to protect his victim.

This story is a stark reminder of the private struggles faced by victims of domestic violence, often masked by perpetrators who maintain a facade around others. Let’s continue to support those who are suffering in silence and raise awareness about the importance of reaching out for help.
