Exciting news for the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal! This historic 225-year-old waterway has secured a crucial funding boost of over £2 million to tackle the pressing issue of water supply. Climate change and leaks have pushed the canal’s survival into murky waters, with parts almost drying up earlier this year.

But fear not! A short-term collaboration between Dŵr Cymru and the Canal & River Trust was announced to keep the canal flowing until 2026. And now, with the Welsh Government pledging up to £400,000 annually for the next five years, alongside a yearly contribution from the Canal & River Trust, there’s hope on the horizon.
This support ensures the canal’s future, safeguarding the businesses, communities, and wildlife it supports. Did you know this charming waterway pumps over £30 million into the local economy and supports more than 1,000 jobs? It’s a big win for heritage and sustainability!

Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies expressed commitment to protecting this Welsh treasure, emphasising the canal’s role in cultural heritage and regional development. And let’s not forget the £5 million earmarked for the Manorafon pumping station’s refurbishment – a testament to the canal’s continuing importance.
Ben Cottam from Glandŵr Cymru highlighted the canal’s enduring legacy, recalling its inaugural coal shipment to Brecon. The Ministry’s efforts, along with committed partners, bring fresh resilience to this beloved man-made waterway.

Thanks to passionate locals and dedicated community groups, the Mon & Brec’s story is one of revival and resilience. Let’s keep it flowing for future generations!
