Tennis star Daniil Medvedev has found his emotions a costly affair at the US Open after a fiery first-round exit. The Russian player, who once lifted the US Open trophy in 2021, was slapped with a hefty £30,000 fine due to unsportsmanlike conduct and racket abuse.

Medvedev’s troubles began during a tense match against France’s Benjamin Bonzi. After a controversial call by chair umpire Greg Allensworth allowed Bonzi a first serve, Medvedev stormed to the chair, questioning the umpire’s decision in a passionate outburst. Despite the late-night crowd’s potential support, they were treated to a six-minute delay as tensions mounted.

Adding fuel to the fire, Medvedev referenced criticism from tennis peer Reilly Opelka, who had previously called Allensworth the “worst ref on the ATP.” With emotions running high, Medvedev’s on-court antics continued as he smashed his racket in frustration following his defeat to Bonzi, earning him an additional fine.

While players exiting in the first round pocket £81k, Medvedev’s tantrum means he leaves New York with just over £50k. Not the first disappointment in the year for the former champion, he also faced an early exit at Wimbledon, similarly against Bonzi.

Medvedev, aware of the consequences of his actions, chose to keep comments to a minimum post-match, saying, “I’m getting a big enough fine, so if I speak, I’m in big trouble.”

A tumultuous Grand Slam year for Medvedev indeed, but here’s hoping he can channel that passion for a triumphant return on the court. 🌟👟
