Shocking scenes at the River Kenfig in Wales as a foul-smelling, discoloured mess of untreated sewage has been streaming into the water, wreaking havoc on local wildlife and the community! Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has launched an investigation due to repeated discharges from Marlas Sewage Pumping Station, operated by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water. These discharges are causing chaos at the Kenfig National Nature Reserve, a vital conservation area.

Local Plaid Cymru Senedd member Sera Evans reported an “overwhelming stench of sewage” during her visit, demanding urgent action from Welsh Water. In response, Welsh Water is rolling out a rapid recovery plan, apologising for the environmental toll.

What’s going wrong? Issues stem from a nine-kilometre pipeline repeatedly bursting since August 2023. From February, a continuous release has been reported, pushing NRW to take action. A temporary overland pipe has been installed, with Welsh Water working on a £13m project to replace the ageing sewer system.

NRW has expressed intense concern over the impact, citing substantial environmental damage, particularly to local fish populations and biodiversity. The focus now is on cleanup and river restoration efforts. Welsh Water is installing an aeration system in the river to help revive fish and wildlife populations by improving oxygen levels.

Let’s hope for swift action to safeguard the future of the River Kenfig. 🌿🐟💧
