Residents of Llanellen in Monmouthshire are calling for urgent action as dangerous road conditions have left them in constant fear. The busy A4042, a major trunk road, races through their village, where speeding and collisions have become a grim routine. Locals are desperate for safety measures like speed limits, crossings, and enforcement.

Sioned Yates, a village resident, described the worsening situation, sharing heartbreaking stories like the recent crash that destroyed an 80-year-old’s garden wall for the fourth time. “The lady was just in tears,” she recalled. Frustration reached its peak after a May 7th incident when a vehicle careened into another garden, igniting fresh calls for changes.
Residents claim that monitoring speeding is nearly impossible. “The police say it’s unsafe to even stand by the road for speed checks,” said Sioned. The lack of crossings over a blind humpback bridge makes daily life perilous for pedestrians, especially with homes and amenities on both sides of the road. With a 40mph limit, parents fear for their children crossing to catch the morning bus.

The community insists they don’t need lavish infrastructure, just basic safety solutions to prevent tragedies. Despite understanding that not all drivers will obey limits, residents believe most would if proper measures were enforced.

The Welsh Government stated they take these concerns seriously and intend to monitor recent incidents for further action, though locals demand change now. With a meeting scheduled at their village hall, the people of Llanellen are determined to push for action before someone pays the ultimate price. Enough promises—they’re calling for immediate intervention to reclaim their safety.
