Villagers in Gwaelod-y-Garth near Cardiff got the shock of their lives when what was thought to be a small earthquake turned out to be much worse. An explosion at a nearby quarry unleashed a “wall of water” that flooded homes, leaving streets unrecognisable and residents reeling.

Steve Mordecai heard a loud bang, reminiscent of an earthquake, and rushed outside, only to find himself swept away by the forceful floodwaters. The flood ripped through his home, damaging the ground floor and garden, and causing thousands of pounds in damage. Despite electric outages and severe damage, Steve is staying put, determined to clean up and rebuild.
The Breedon Group quarry where the explosion occurred is working with authorities, but many questions remain as residents grapple with the aftermath. Families are now dealing with the wreckage, salvaging what they can, and some, who’ve been away for school holidays, will sadly return to devastation.

Local resident Gareth Spencer described the blast as “massive” and noted the absence of usual warning sirens, making the sudden flood feel even more shocking. As emergency services manage the scene, the community is urged to steer clear of discoloured water in streams and rivers.
