Alun Wyn Jones, the Welsh rugby icon, is on an exciting new journey—learning to speak Welsh! On a recent episode of the show ‘Jonathan’, he boldly showcased his developing language skills. Alongside Welsh legends Sarra Elgan, Nigel Owens, and Jonathan ‘Jiffy’ Davies, Jones bravely conversed entirely in Welsh. Despite his nerves, Jones charmingly quipped, “I’m more nervous about speaking Welsh with you guys than playing rugby – so be nice!”

During the show, Alun Wyn received a heartwarming surprise. His wife, Anwen, who is fluent in Welsh, joined him for a ‘Mr and Mrs’ quiz. The couple shared a sweet backstory of how they met at an Elton John concert in 2009. While Alun didn’t send a text at first, a playful Facebook poke set their romance in motion.

Jones’s motivation for learning Welsh extends beyond the screen. With a grandmother who once taught the language and a family that speaks Welsh at home, he’s eager to not only connect more deeply with his roots but also keep up with his kids!
In an inspiring turn, he joins the Welsh Government’s quest for a million Welsh speakers by 2050, proudly counting himself as one of many contributors. His appearance on the Welsh TV series ‘Iaith Ar Daith’ further built his confidence, admitting he enjoys the learning process with his supportive family in Llanbrynmair, north Wales.
Alun is staying busy post-rugby too. Currently, he’s working with Swansea University, holding the honorary title of Colonel of the 3rd Battalion of The Royal Welsh, and juggling it all while running his Mimosa Rum business. But above all, he’s a dedicated dad to three kids.
Next on the horizon for this unstoppable legend? A highly anticipated appearance on MasterChef next week! Stay tuned for more from Alun Wyn. 🏉📺🍳
