Meet Bernie and Thomas McDonagh, two brothers who pulled off a shocking con job, tricking sellers out of over £30,000 worth of goods, including watches, phones, and laptops. Their tactic? A fake banking app that made sellers believe payments were made for items they never intended to pay for.

Operating across Cardiff and parts of England in 2023, Bernie and Thomas used charm to lure unsuspecting sellers and then switched to threatening behaviour when doubt arose. Bernie alone targeted 25 individuals, often haggling over prices and flashing a bogus driving licence. He’d then show a fake transfer on a false Metro bank app before disappearing with the goods. If confronted, he threatened violence or just laughed at their attempts for justice.

Thomas wasn’t any different. During one brazen scam, he injured a seller who tried to retrieve his item, reiterating their ruthless approach. Both brothers later attempted to sell off these ill-gotten gains, but their spree finally came to an end, thanks to diligent police work. Bernie bagged goods worth over £27k and Thomas over £10k.

Their sentence? Bernie got 18 months in prison, and Thomas got 19 months behind bars and a three-year driving disqualification.

A word of warning – always verify payment, preferably using secure methods like PayPal or cash. Never hand over your items before payment is confirmed. Stay safe and smart when selling online! 💸🔒
