In a surprising twist at Kirk Balk Academy, Izobella Dawson, 13, found herself suspended not once, but twice, for wearing what her mum Rachel calls “invisible” earrings. These clear plastic retainers were Izzy’s attempt to comply with the school’s “no jewellery” rule while keeping her piercings discreet. But the academy wasn’t having it.

Rachel, 42, expressed her frustration, stating, “It’s crazy! If no one can explain the rule, is it really fair?” She argued that the earrings, designed to disguise piercings, should be an exception. What’s more baffling is that the school’s strict enforcement seems to have come out of the blue, leaving Rachel and over 90 other families scratching their heads.

“I’ve spoken with the school, and they just keep saying it’s the policy,” Rachel shared, adding that this ‘inconsistency’ in enforcing the rule is what’s truly maddening. Despite her pleas, the school insists no changes in policy have been made, although they admit to ‘inconsistencies’ in its enforcement.

Rachel’s taken her complaint to the school, hoping for some sense to prevail. “Izzy missed four days of learning for something so trivial. She was trying to do the right thing!” she lamented. Izobella, now back in class, had to remove the retainers to avoid further suspension.

The school stands firm, declaring, “Uniform policies set clear expectations. Our focus is on student wellbeing and high standards.” For Rachel, though, the saga continues as she waits for a formal response from the academy.
