🚨 Big Changes Ahead for Welsh Rugby! 🚨

The search for a new Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) chair is officially on, as Richard Collier-Keywood prepares to step down this July after a groundbreaking tenure. Appointed as the first independent chair in 2023, Collier-Keywood led a new era of governance within the WRU. But now, a critical transition looms on the horizon.
Previously, clubs had a direct say in electing the chair, but these days, it’s up to the WRU board. Even though clubs don’t get a vote, they can still call for an Extraordinary General Meeting if needed, to push a vote of no confidence.

It looks like Andrew Williams, an influential figure on the current board, is the leading in-house candidate. Williams is well-respected in Welsh rugby circles and has the experience needed to guide the sport through some tricky times. But there are whispers about other potential candidates from outside, like Aviva’s top boss, Amanda Blanc, and former First Minister Carwyn Jones. Could they step up to the scrum?
The new chair will inherit significant challenges, like the possible reduction of professional teams from four clubs to three. A strategic roadmap is already on the table and expected to be revealed in June. While the current plan is board-approved, who knows what changes a new leader might bring to the game?
As speculation swirls, one thing is clear: the next WRU chair will need to steer the organisation through some stormy weather, making sure Welsh rugby remains strong and competitive on the world stage.
