Setback in Production: Tata’s Latest Electric Arc Furnace Faces One-Year Delay

Tata’s ambitious £1.25bn project to bring a cutting-edge electric arc furnace to Port Talbot has hit a bit of a snag. Due to challenges in securing enough electricity for the massive site, the opening could see a delay of up to 12 months. However, Tata bosses are optimistic about reducing this timeframe.

Koushik Chatterjee, Tata Steel’s CFO, mentioned they’ve shaved six months off the original 18-month delay. He’s shooting to bring it down further, noting the hold-up is due to a delay in new electrical infrastructure from National Grid. The company is in talks with key players, including the UK Government, to get new electrical connections up and running ASAP. Meanwhile, Tata’s CEO, TV Narendran, suggested using the waiting time for preparatory work to hit the ground running once the power is sorted.
