The eagerly awaited reopening of Newport’s Transporter Bridge has hit a bump – or should we say, a beam? 🏗️ Originally set for a grand unveiling by December 2025, we’re now eyeing a full reveal towards the end of 2026. Why the delay? Well, parts of this Grade-I listed beauty were found to be in worse shape than expected. 😬
Built back in 1906, this engineering marvel is undergoing a massive makeover. Picture this: repairs at dizzying heights, over water, and facing the ever-unpredictable British weather. 🌧️ Despite these challenges, the team is making strides. They’ve already repaired and repainted 80% of the bridge’s boom and given the gondola a snazzy new look too. 🚡✨
While the new visitor centre is already drawing small crowds on special tours, the full experience won’t launch until the bridge is as good as new. It’s slow and steady for this monumental makeover, ensuring it remains Newport’s pride and joy for years to come.

As the council highlighted, “It’s crucial the bridge is refurbished properly to preserve its iconic status.” Thanks to the council, UK and Welsh governments, the Wolfson Foundation, and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, this cherished landmark is slowly but surely getting the care it deserves.
