Back in 2007, Lowri had the time of her life exploring India with a friend. Little did she know, she also brought home a parasite party – never suspecting a thing until 4 years later when she passed a massive tapeworm. A doctor assured her it was handled, but soon after, something more sinister developed – seizures, severe headaches, and a diagnosis of neurocysticercosis, a rare brain condition caused by tapeworm larvae.

Living in Cardiff, the seizures and psychosis that followed took a serious toll, leaving Lowri unable to work and struggling with her independence. Despite treatment, the battle raged on for years as she lost her driving licence, moved back in with family, and tried a cocktail of medications to combat the relentless brain parasites.

Lowri’s ongoing journey has been a rollercoaster of medical treatments and emotional struggles, including a tough stint in a neuropsychiatric ward. She endured it all with incredible resilience, and after a hard-fought 10 years, her seizures are finally under control.

Now, Lowri’s turning her ordeal into a positive force. She’s sharing her story through a 12-part podcast series, diving into her own experience and shedding light on the mysterious world of tropical diseases. With plans to include interviews with consultants and experts, she hopes to support others going through similar situations and raise awareness about this lesser-known condition.

Teaming up with her long-time friend Nicola, they’re crowdfunding to bring this podcast to life. Want to help?
