A shocking case of animal cruelty has hit the headlines. Mason Paines, 24, brazenly shared videos of his dogs viciously attacking badgers and a fox on TikTok. These disturbing videos depicted Paines’ grey Bedlington Patterdale Terrier, Fern, and white Patterdale Terrier, Doris, engaging in illegal hunting in the woods. An alert member of an animal charity quickly reported the appalling footage to the police and the RSPCA.
During a search of Paines’ home, officers seized both his dogs and mobile phone, where they found more distressing videos and WhatsApp messages with his father discussing the attacks. Despite claiming he was “in shock” during the incidents, the evidence showed he boasted about the violent acts.
In Cardiff Crown Court, Paines pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including causing animal fighting and wilfully injuring badgers. Judge Lucy Crowther, highlighting the seriousness of the offences, sentenced him to 10 months in prison, disqualifying him from owning or keeping dogs for a decade. The RSPCA has since taken responsibility for the dogs involved.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of reporting animal cruelty and the strong legal consequences for such inhumane behaviour. Let’s stand together to protect our wildlife. 🦊
