Michelle Morgan from the Monmouthshire Housing Association shared these eye-opening stats at a recent council meeting: out of nearly 4,000 people waiting for homes, 52% are employed. Even more shocking? There’s a frenzied average of 98 bids per affordable home! 😲

The housing demand is skyrocketing, especially in Abergavenny, followed by Chepstow, Caldicot, and Monmouth—areas where average house prices are over £320,000. That’s a hefty price tag! 🏡💷

The Labour-led council is pushing to make 50% of new housing developments affordable. Their ambitious plan, which includes over 1,000 new homes, aims to make housing accessible and eco-friendly, ensuring they’re net-zero carbon—good for the planet too! 🌍

Yet, stories like a young woman earning £30,000 a year in Caldicot highlight the struggle. Despite being employed, she’s unable to leave her family home, ranking low on the housing priority list despite making 72 bids. The barrier is real, especially for young singles. 😓

While ambitious development plans are on the table, concerns about traffic, air quality, and environmental impact linger. And while it’s a steep hill to climb, this new plan could be a game-changer for housing in Wales. 🏗️
