📚 Exciting changes in Cardiff’s education scene! The city has seen a dramatic rise in home education, with numbers skyrocketing by nearly 60% since 2021! Cardiff Council’s latest report highlights these significant shifts, showing more families are choosing to educate their children at home or in alternative settings. Why? Reasons range from lifestyle choices to tackling school phobia, and even philosophical beliefs.

At the same time, there’s been a sharp increase in pupils learning outside mainstream schools for various reasons like illness and mental health challenges. Nearly 70% of these students are boys, requiring a tailored approach to their education needs.

On a brighter note, Cardiff’s GCSE and A-level results are soaring above the national average! Yet, challenges persist in closing the attainment gap, particularly for those on free school meals. School exclusions present a mixed picture, with primary levels seeing a rise, but secondary exclusions are notably down.
The report also reveals that most students are securing positive futures after leaving Year 11, venturing into education, employment, or training. However, the number of young people not in education, employment, or training has risen slightly, marking an area in need of focus.
Despite these hurdles, Cardiff is committed to enhancing education quality while striving for financial sustainability, given the rising costs and complex learner needs. School attendance is improving, slowly working back towards pre-pandemic levels.
Stay tuned for how Cardiff plans to address these challenges and continue supporting young people’s potential! 🚀
